Hilarie married One Tree Hill assistant director Ian Prange, son of executive producer Greg Prange, in 2004, during her time on One Tree Hill. They resided in Wilmington, North Carolina, where the show was filmed. The couple divorced in 2009.
In 2009, Hilarie was set up with Jeffrey Dean Morgan by her friend Danneel Ackles who is married to Jensen Ackles who played Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s son on CW’s Supernatural. The couple welcomed their first child, a son named Augustus Morgan in March 2010.
Hilarie and Jeffrey were married sometime in 2014.
In September 2017, it was announced that the couple is expecting their second child, a girl. Their daughter, George Virginia Morgan, was born on February 16, 2018, after a lot of trying and many heartbreaking losses which Hilarie shared on her instagram.
Hilarie started her career in 2000 as a VJ for MTV’s Total Request Live (TRL). Although, she was only meant to be a guest commentator for one segment, the producers decided to offer her a permanent job. In 2003, when she got her role on One Tree Hill in North Carolina, she split her time and worked Monday through Thursday on One Tree Hill and then returned every Friday back to New York to work on TRL.
In 2002, Hilarie made her television debut, playing herself on The WB drama Dawson’s Creek. She shared her scene with Chad Michael Murray who later became her co-star and love interest on One Tree Hill.
In April 2003, Hilarie was cast in The WB drama series One Tree Hill, portraying the role of Peyton Sawyer, a fiercely independent visual and musical artist and cheerleader. The series premiered on September 23, 2003 and was the network’s top rated program of the year. The role of Peyton Sawyer was considered Hilarie’s breakout role and is her best-known to date. Her performance received critical praise and earned her four Teen Choice Award nominations. After 6 years of playing Peyton Sawyer, Hilarie decided not to return for a seventh season. Her character left with her husband Lucas Scott and their daughter Sawyer Scott to live happily ever after.
In June 2005, Hilarie made her feature film debut opposite Allison Janney and Cheryl Hines in the drama Our Very Own which centered on five small-town teenagers who dream of a better life. The film was released to positive reviews from critics. Hilarie and her co-stars received the “Outstanding Ensemble Acting” award at the prestigious Sarasota Film Festival.
In September 2007, Hilarie appeared in the Lifetime drama Normal Adolescent Behavior about a group of friends who are in a six-way polyfidelitous relationship. Hilarie played Ryan.
In the same year, she co-starred in the supernatural horror film Solstice opposite Amanda Seyfried and her One Tree Hill co-star Elisabeth Harnois.
In 2007, Hilarie created her own production company called Southern Gothic Production (SoGoPro) along with Nick Gray, Kelly Tenney, James Burton and Meg Mortimer. She produced a short film The True-Love Tale of Boyfriend & Girlfriend that was released in 2009. The movie featured her One Tree Hill co-star Austin Nichols.
In June 2008, Hilarie filmed the thriller The List as Jo Johnston. The film was shot in Wilmington, North Carolina while One Tree Hill was on a production break.
In the same year, Hilarie appeared, in a small role as the deceased mother of Dakota Fanning’s character, in the Fox Searchlight Pictures drama The Secret Life of Bees as Deborah Owens. The ensemble was awarded with a Hollywood Film Awards.
In January 2009, Hilarie was cast in the drama Bloodworth, an adaptation of the novel Provinces of Night by William Gay, opposite Hilary Duff and Val Kilmer. It was filmed in April and May in Wilmington, North Carolina. The film premiered at the 2010 Santa Barbara International Film Festival in February 2010.
In July 2010, Variety announced Hilarie would have a recurring arc in the USA Network crime drama series White Collar as Sara Ellis, an insurance investigator in the second season. In February 2011, she was made a series regular for the third season which premiered on June 7, 2011. Hilarie was switched back to the recurring cast in the fourth season.
At the beginning of 2012, Hilarie guest-starred on the ABC police comedy-drama Castle, playing Kay Cappuccio, a reality television star who is accused of the murder of a famous dog trainer, opposite Justin Hartley who played her boyfriend. The episode aired on January 23, 2012.
In December 2012, she appeared in her first Hallmark movie Naughty or Nice, playing Krissy Kringle, who receives a magical book that was meant for Santa and uses it to help others but also herself. The movie also features Matt Dallas who played her boyfriend.
On March 14, Deadline announced that Hilarie was cast as Maddie Soto in the Fox Pilot The List opposite Michael Peña. Sadly, the pilot was not picked up.

In July 2015, Hilarie appeared on CBS sci-fi drama Extant as Anna Schaefer in a recurring role where she once again reunited with One Tree Hill co-star Tyler Hilton. The show also featured her husband Jeffrey Dean Morgan.
In December 2015, she starred in another Lifetime Christmas movie Last Chance for Christmas, playing single mom Annie who is trying to save her Reindeer farm with a little help from Santa’s helper.
In 2016, she appeared in an episode of Togetherness playing Kennedy.
In the same year, she was cast on the FOX cop drama Lethal Weapon, playing Karen Palmer, a straightforward DEA agent who means business and takes her job as a DEA agent very seriously. Her character constantly gets into arguments with Chace Crawford’s Martin Riggs but that is mostly because there is an undeniable attraction between them which they end up acting on. She appears in a few episode in the first season and then comes back for two more episodes in the second season. Due to her pregnancy she couldn’t be on for more but Hilarie has expressed her desire to come back because she really enjoys playing this character and working with the cast.
In Summer 2016, she appeared in her third Hallmark movie Summer Villa opposite Victor Webster. Hilarie played a single mom and best-selling author Terry Russell who goes to France to get some inspiration for her new book only to find that her editor’s brother, cocky, hot-shot New York chef, Matthew Everston is also staying at the same house. They have to find a way to get along.
